It is a festival in which the tribes worshipping the dragon totems in the ancient Wuyue area (the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the south) held a totem ritual. The custom of tribal totem rituals was held in the form of dragon boat racing on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. During the Warring States Period, the Chu State (now Hubei) poet Qu Yuan died on the bouldering of the Luojiang River on that day. The rulers set up the loyalty and patriotic label to mark the Dragon Boat Festival as a festival to commemorate Qu Yuan; some areas also commemorated Wu Zikai and Cao Yu.
